Artist Statement

Finishing up the loop on a butterfly pen

"It starts with a spark of a propane and oxygen flame. I use heat and gravity to melt and manipulate borosilicate glass into precise intricate designs, applying colors that may or may not strike into an unpredicatable rainbow. I heat the glass in the flame until it is molten. I continuously spin the hot piece of glass using centripetal force to keep the shape round. All of my energy and concentration in that time frame is focused into each piece of glass.

The finished art work is always a surprise. It is hard to know how the colors will contrast or how the final shape of the design will come out until several hours later when the piece has annealed in a kiln at a thousand degrees fehrenheit and slowly cooled down enough to touch.
